TRANSFUSION MEDICINE
Transfusion
Medicine Department of BRB Hospitals Limited is an
internationally benchmarked, comprehensive transfusion care facility dedicated
to delivering safe, timely, and high-quality transfusion services around the
clock. Established in 2014
and operating under a Government-issued license (Blood
Bank License No. HSM 7014377; Registration Code: 54411),
the department functions in accordance with the principles and requirements of
the Safe Blood
Transfusion Act, 2002.
Strategically
located within the hospital premises, it provides a seamless, 24-hour continuum
of transfusion support for patients requiring blood and blood component therapy, therapeutic
apheresis, and advanced immunohematology laboratory diagnostics. Driven by a commitment to patient safety, clinical
excellence, and technological advancement, the department employs state-of-the-art equipment and modern
transfusion technologies, supported by a robust and stringent quality management system.
Every
stage—from donor selection and blood collection to component preparation,
testing, storage, compatibility assessment, and transfusion support—is governed
by rigorous quality and safety standard. BRB Hospitals Limited’s Transfusion
Medicine Department strives to ensure a reliable supply of the safest possible blood and
blood components,
while advancing modern transfusion practices and specialized patient-centered
care.
A. Blood Donor Service:
·
All
donations received in the Transfusion medicine department are voluntary
non-remunerated.
·
All
necessary safety measures are taken for both the donors and the recipients
including performing the mandatory screening tests for infectious diseases
(Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, HIV, Syphilis and Malaria) and hemoglobin
estimation.
·
Donor
screening is done by well trained staff maintaining donor privacy and
confidentiality.
·
Well
equipped with automated blood collection monitors for whole blood collection
and state of the art – apheresis technology Platelet collection.
B. Blood Component Services:

The

component safety by integrating modern technology, advanced component
preparation and storage systems, and robust quality control measures, in line
with the latest advancements in modern transfusion medicine.

C. Serological (Immunohematology) Test Services:

equipped with fully automated Solid Phase Method (Immucor Echo) and
semi-automated Column Agglutination Technology (Orth workstation) analyzer using
which will help in solving complex immune-hematological problems which may
arise either due to previous pregnancy, transfusion or transplantation as well
as autoimmune diseases.

D. Transfusion
Transmitted Infection (TTI) Screening Laboratory:
Fully automated 4th generation
Chemiluminscence Assay (Vitros 3600) for mandatory tests i.e. HIV 1&2, p24
antigen, HBsAg and HCV.

The therapeutic use of apheresis technology is done to remove disease causing substances or blood components and providing supportive and therapeutic solutions using state of the art apheresis equipment. We are involved in advances in transfusion medicine.
F. Blood Donor Eligibility
1.
The blood donor
must be in good physical and mental health.
2.
Every four month, an individual can
donate blood.
3.
In case of Apheretic platelet, blood
donor can donate every 15 days.
4.
A blood donor can
donate Apheretic platelets one month after donating whole blood.
5.
Age of blood donor should be between 18
to 60 years.
6.
The donor must weigh at least 50 kg or
60 kg in the case of an Apheretic platelet donor.
7.
Body temperature must be below 99.5
degrees Fahrenheit.
8.
Without medication, blood pressure
readings: Diastolic 60 to 100 mm Hg, Systolic 100 to 180 mm Hg.
9.
Minimum Hemoglobin level (12.5 g/100 ml
for men, 11.5 g/100 ml for women)
Platelet counts range from 1,50,000 to
4,50,000/?L (Apheretic
Platelet and Platelet Concentrate Donation)
10.
No respiratory illnesses are
anticipated.
11.
There will not be any skin conditions
12.
No contagious illnesses (such as
Malaria, HIV/AIDS, Syphilis, Hepatitis B, or Hepatitis C) will exist.
13. There will not be any puncture or scar marks on hand or arms after professional blood donation or medicine injection.
