Burn & Plastic Surgery at BRB Hospitals Limited

BRB Hospitals Limited has a modern technology and equipment-based Burn & Plastic Surgery department, overseen by specialized consultants.

Burn Treatment

Most minor burns can be treated at home and usually heal within a couple of weeks. For serious burns, after appropriate first aid and wound assessment, your treatment may involve medications, wound dressings, therapy, and surgery.

The goals of treatment are to:

  • Control pain
  • Remove dead tissue
  • Prevent infection
  • Reduce scarring risk
  • Regain function

People with severe burns may require treatment at specialized burn centers. They may need skin grafts to cover large wounds, emotional support, and months of follow-up care such as physical therapy.

Medical Treatment

After receiving first aid for a major burn, your medical care may include medications and products intended to encourage healing.

  • Water-based treatments: Techniques such as ultrasound mist therapy may be used to clean and stimulate wound tissue.
  • Fluids to prevent dehydration: Intravenous (IV) fluids may be needed to prevent dehydration and organ failure.
  • Pain and anxiety medications: Healing burns can be very painful. Medications such as morphine and anti-anxiety drugs may be administered, especially during dressing changes.
  • Burn creams and ointments: Topical products like bacitracin and silver sulfadiazine (Silvadene) help prevent infection and prepare the wound to close. These are used when the patient is not being transferred to a burn center.
  • Dressings: Various specialty wound dressings may be used. If transferred to a burn center, the wound may be covered in dry gauze only.
  • Drugs that fight infection: IV antibiotics may be required if an infection develops.
  • Tetanus shot: A tetanus shot may be recommended after a burn injury.
